Why can small generators be an economic disaster for Ukrainians facing power outages? Watch the Ukrainian video podcast hosted by Hromadske Radio about generators, the import of EU electricity to Ukraine, the seasonality of electricity prices, and how businesses can launch a gas turbine from scratch 👀
The program was attended by:
- Roman Zinchenko, an expert on energy efficiency solutions and head of Greencubator;
- Oleksandr Kharchenko, a director of the Energy Research Center;
- Yurii Gaidai, a senior economist at the Center for Economic Strategy, hosted the program.
According to Roman Zinchenko, a generator installed in a coffee shop will never be able to compare with an industrial power plant of at least 20 MW in terms of production efficiency:
“The generator pays off in only one case: if it operates at its rated capacity, charging the batteries. In all other cases, it produces net losses. That’s why, firstly, the cost per kilowatt is outrageous. And secondly, it produces 50-70% more than a small business consumes at any given time.”
Roman is confident that the combination of “battery + inverter + (in case of a power outage) generator” makes much more sense in the long run, at least for six months, than “let’s take out the generator and start it up.”
