First "Energy Efficient Universities" confrerence have launched greencubator's series of events aimed at creating energy efficiency growth points in Ukrainian universities. On Tuesday, July 28th 2009 more than 40 of its participants have gathered in Pereyaslav-Khmelnytskyj State Pedagogical University to jointly draft the ways and determine practical steps for Ukrainian universities to advance in the sphere of energy efficiency . Below is the greencubator team's photo report from the conference.

Participating regions
Representatives of universities, businesses, NGOs and public authorities have participated in first conference of "Energy Efficient Universities" series. All of participants either already work in energy-efficiency field or are actively intersted in the topic. Greencubator team is very pleased to say that thanks to sponsorship from Schneider Electric Ukraine we were able to gather university representatives from many regions of Ukraine (shown on the map below):

Report topic: Greeting to the conference participants
Victor Petrovych greeted the participants of the conference "Energy-Efficient Universities". His firm support and commitment to the conference could be felt not only in his words but even more in his actions - Pereyaslav Khmelnytskyj State Pedagogical University actively participated in preparations to the conference and provided all necessary facilities for it. Among other important things, the University have provided its bus so that participants could comfortably travel from Kyiv to Pereyaslav-Khmelnytskyj, paid for catering services and provided a convenient and modern conference hall for the participants. Though, Victor Petrovych Kotsur in his speech have focused on different topics - the challenges of energy efficiency that the whole country and its educators face and the ways Ukrainian education could use and benefit from energy-efficient technologies.

Report topic: "Presentation of greencubator energy innovation support programme and "Energy Efficient Universities" initiative"
Roman Zinchenko's adress was a response to th often-asked question of greencubator team's motivation to work in energy-efficiency field at large and carry out conferences on energy efficiency in unioversities in particular. Roman have brought to audience a simple thought that we as a country had already passed a point of no return and can not afford to live any longer in energy-wasteful system. According to his words, Ukraine can no longer afford itself to go on like that any longer, and it is namely universities that can become the growh points for energy-efficiency which will serve as a positive examples for many.

Report topic: "Energy-saving system for Ukrainian universities”
Mr Kovalchuk in his report have combined the information on technical capabilities of NTU "KPI", report on installation of heat and energy-generating facilities at the University's campus and report on his institution's work on modern standards for energy-saving for educational institutions. According to his report, the Institute for energy-saving and energy management cooperates actively with Ministry of Education and Science to finalize the development of energy-efficiency standards for Ukrainian universities. Apart from that, Artem Mykhailovych have proposed to other universities, especially non-technical, support in implementing energy-efficient solutions in their campuses.

Report topic: "Energy-saving programmes in UK universities"
Victor Kyrylenko presented to the audience a set of examples of UK iniversities' work on energy-saving and energy management in universites of United Kingdom. In this European country energy-saving policies in universities recieve a solid state support and is implemented in cooperation with business. The examples of implementing energy-efficient technology in British universities were in majority of cases related to ecology programmes. Such a strong link between ecological and energy-saving programmes, according to Victor Kyrylenko is quite natural for Europeans, since it corresponds to the concept of sustainable development.

Report topic: "The experience of energy management in Dolyna town and its application in Ukrainian universities"
Volodymyr Smolij, a practicing energy manager started his report with description of the measures that during the last (2008) year have allowed his home city Dolyna with around 27 000 of inhabitants to save more than 46 000 hryvnas on energy consumption. Volodymyr have provided a clear picture of modern prices on energy resources and the logics behind their rise in now and in the future. His report also contained a brief description of current state of utilities and infrastructure of Ukrainian cities and the methods practiced in these realms by "Energy Efficient Cities of Ukraine". According to Volodymyr Smolij, it is namely these methods that allowed Association Members to economise millions and move towards sustainable development model. Volodymyr provided his vision of using these methods and approaches in Universities' campuses, which, as he noted function like miniature cities thus creating an opportunity to re-apply the practicaly verified approaches.

Report topic: "Schneider Electric: energy-efficient technologies in electric energy distribution systems"
Oleksandr Kryzhanovskij represented a corporate sponsor of the first "Energy-Efficient Universities" conference. His report included data on his company's experience in saving different resources, particularly energy and water. The energetic presentation made by Olexandr corresponded with the motto of his company on the first slide of his keynote "Make the maximum out of your energy". In this report amongst the most interesting parts of it were real-life examples of Shcneider Electric implementations of energy-saving practices in Ukrainian cities. As Olexander underlined these projects allowed to drastically reduce the waste of energy resources and in some cases to provide cities wtih all-day hot water supply just by installing resource management system.

Report topic: “Clusters as a real form of Universities' participation in energy savingі”
Ivan Stacenko in his report have described a practical experience of university implementation of energy-efficient technologies using cluster models. In his report on clusters he demonstrated many tech developments in the sphere of energy efficiency - a result of R&D work of his own, his colleagues and his students. Besides tech inventions and developments Ivan Stacenko have presented a social innovation - his team's own cluster model which allows Sevastopol universities to interact with businesses, investors and inventors.

Report topic: “Universities' role in innovation development of the economy. International experience.”
Larysa presented a report with a topic which is especially important for Ukrainian universities. This report included overview and analysis of how European universities interact with business and public authorities not just for energy saving but for creation of new innovative businesses and conductung fundamental and applied research in the sphere of energy-saving and alternative energy. Acoording to Larysa's report when it comes to university-developed innovations and their commercialization technical expertise and R&D is not enough. Development of the efficient interaction model for education istitutions, business and state which would make cooperation mutually fruitful is a must.

Report topic: “Disspelling the myths around renewable and autonomous power”
Favorskyj Yurij - the owner of the "Avante" company that supplies solutions for energy autonomy based on renewable energy is at the same time one of the most prominent professors of National Technical University "Kyiv Polytechnical Institute". So, in his report he combined his pedagogical talent and business communication skills. The result was more than efficient - he managed to explain many hard-to-understand technical problems to non-tech audience and really disspell many myths that exist around renewable energy and autonomous power supply.
Solonin Anatolij
Association of energy auditors in housing and utilities, vice-director deputy
Anatolij Solonin, as a true energy auditor made an important point by asking conference participants if any of the universities had energy passports. According to his report, withought implementint energy passports in university camplses' buildings the universities will be unable to cut their energy use and implement energy-efficient technologies, since namely after energy audit university can define economical, technical, financial priorities and capabilities in the sphere of implementing energy efficient technologies.

Report topic: “Development of energy-saving activities in Sumy State university”
Iryna was one of those who focused on practice. In just 7 munites she managed to provide a clear overview of the main activities in the field of energy-efficiency in Sumy State University.
Mykahilova Iryna
"Edipresse" publishing house
Iryna adressed the participants with a warm welcome speech on behalf of "Edipresse" publishing house and wished the whole "Energy Efficient Universities" initiative a great success. She also noted that for her company promoting energy-saving technologies in "Edipresse" journals is an importnat priority.

Report topic: "Preparation and implementation of "Fundamentals of sustainable energy development of agricultural complex" course in university ”
The report made by Oleksandr Samylin was not completely fitting the announced theme of the conference, still it was extremely interesting for pretty much all of the participants. It is no wonder, if we consider the technologies, which Oleksandr presented. Among them - technologies of biofile generation from biomass which allows to power agricultural vehicles. Another important part of Oleksandr's report was a review of current state of investment in universities which work on developing alternative fuel technologies.

Report topic: “Досвід впровадження енергоефективних технологій в Національному Університеті “Острозька Академія”
It is not widely known that in Ostrog, a hometown to first Ukrainian university streets are lit using solar batteries and accumulators. Oleksij managed to prove the participants of the conference that not only the city but his university also works on energy-saving and energy management. Moreover, he noted that National University "Ostrozka Akademija" is ready to host one of the next conferences of the "Energy Efficient Universities" series.
Bartashuk Igor,
Company “Three Oceans”, CTO
Report topic:
Igor Bartashuk in reported on what he is doing professionally - selling heat pumps. His lecture became a whole lecture for those participants that were not familiar with heat pump technology. Igor himself was dynamic and energetic speaker, he provided not only technical description of his company's products but also discusses the economic characteristics such as cost, recoupment period, recoupment prerequisites, organizational scale required for this technology.

Report topic: “Experience of implementing gress-roots educational energy-efficiency campaigns in educational institutions"
Andrij Hrutba in his report have focused attention on persuading students to join the grassroots campaigns aimed at energy-saving. As a teacher and responsible secretary he told about his own practical experience of convincing srudents of "KROK" university to join energy-saving actions in the university

Report topic: “IT for energy management and renewable energy technologies”
Dmytro presented a project, of which he is a co-founder - alternative/renewable energy portal energy.ua. Dmytro states that in most cases there exist a whole bunch of problems and misunderstandings between consumers and producers/implementers of alternative energy generating technologies . In most cases the basis for such problems - a poor level of technical knowledge among consumers. To solve this problem, along with his partner - Stanislav Shymanskyj he created an IT-instrument aimed at helping producers/implementers to find a common grounds and common language with consumers. Currently it exists in the form of social network but in a short perspective it will feature consultancy and implementing services for end-users of renewable energy generation.
